2010 Primetime Emmys: Best and Worst Dressed

The fashion at this year's Emmys was a spectral mess. It was all either classically simple or horrifyingly contrived. These women are beautiful enough, there's no need to look like you're trying so hard. At some point, it just becomes embarrassing to watch.

Best dressed:

Simply sequined: Jennifer Carpenter, Claire Danes in Armani Prive

Understated, sleek, and classy: Julie Bowen in J Mendel, Elisabeth Moss in Donna Karan

A textural feast for your eyes: Nina Dobrev in Zuhair Murad, Kyra Sedgwick

White, Grecian perfection: Kim Kardashian in Marchesa, Rose Bryne in Gucci

Worst dressed:

Help me understand what the hell went wrong here. Mindy Kaling and Emily Deschanel, I love you both, but what is this? Mindy Kaling in Aguri Sagimuri, Emily Deschanel in Max Azria Atelier

I love this Alexander McQueen, but I don't love Anna Paquin in this Alexander McQueen. Again, I love Atelier Versace, and most particularly this dress from the spring 2010 lookbook, but January Jones, why would you go and do this dress such an injustice, especially with that dreadful bedhead hair? That's just a damn shame.

Christina Hendricks is definitely a repeat offender when it comes to worst dressed, and this year it was with a Zac Posen. I appreciate her voluptuous figure, but woman, you need to hire a stylist who understands your body. Heidi Klum in Marchesa just offends me. I understand she has legs for miles, but does she need to remind us of that at every social function with an indecently short dress? I mean, how does this woman sit down without revealing her goods to the world?

It just hurts me to look at these. Dianna Agron in Carolina Herrera, Tina Fey in Oscar De La Renta

2010 Primetime Emmy Winners

Two words: MODERN FAMILY! Thank you, Academy, for making the right choice. Sure, sure, I am grieving over the loss of Glenn Close's and Hugh Laurie's Emmy chances, but hey, there's still next year (And hell yes, there will be a next year for Damages! Thank you DirecTV!) for my beloved Damages and House.

Not too much to say right now because I'm still hopped up on excitement from Eric Stonestreet's (how insanely adorable was Jesse Tyler Ferguson when he cried over Eric's win?), Steve Levitan & Christopher Lloyd's, and Modern Family ensemble's wins. I also audibly yelped when Aaron Paul won for Breaking Bad. AGH! He SO deserved that win and I'm so glad he was recognized this year. I still felt like he was robbed last year, especially considering he submitted an episode that was definitely Emmy worthy. I'm also loving and hating Bryan Cranston's consecutive win for best actor in a drama series (Breaking Bad), because as much as I love my Breaking Bad, I will forever and always be loyal to Hugh Laurie and House.

Good TV prevails this year, thank god.

One important question still looms in the air though: will Steve Carrell ever be able to witness the sweet, sweet victory of winning an Emmy, especially considering his next year on The Office will be his last? Let's hope his last season is the best, and the Academy recognizes that.

New AMC Miniseries: "The Walking Dead"

I have a special soft spot for zombie movies. Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, Night of the Living Dead, Zombieland, etc. -- all good stuff.

What's better than a two hour long movie about zombies? A six part miniseries dedicated to these flesh eating creatures directed by the one and only Frank Darabont (The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption). The Walking Dead is based on the popular comic by the same name. Its premise is similar to that of 28 Days in which a man wakes up in a hospital, totally unaware of the apocalyptic outbreak of a virus that renders all human beings into flesh eating, aggression ridden maniacs. He then goes out in search of his family and travels to Atlanta, where there is supposedly a large human presence which is protected by the military.

Watch part one of the miniseries on AMC on Halloween at 10pm. In the meanwhile, check out this teaser trailer AMC just released.

Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock in "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"?

Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks may be pairing up to star in an adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Foer's novel is set in post 9-11 New York and follows a young, bright, and enigmatic 9 year-old boy who finds a key his recently deceased father left him and sets off on a journey through the five boroughs to see what it unlocks.

I can't tell you how much I love this book. It's one of those novels that you pick up and never put down until you've read and dissected every damn word. I read this book while on vacation and abroad, and I still couldn't put it down! Foer is an incredibly effective author when it comes to connecting to the reader and he really knows how to convey feelings of sadness and bittersweet emotion without becoming too contrived. I won't even lie, there were nights I sat in my hotel room, reading this book, gently weeping alone. Well, that paints a pretty picture, now doesn't it? My desperation aside, I swear, this book is fantastic.

This adaptation will be riding heavily on the actor who will be cast to play the young boy and main character, Oskar, and the screenplay. Hanks and Bullock may attract viewers and money for the studios, but that will all mean nothing if they ruin Foer's work.

Whatever comes out of this Hollywood adaptation, I have high expectations for. Starting with Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks is definitely a step in the right direction. Now add that to Stephen Daldry (The Reader, The Hours) directing, Eric Roth (Forrest Gump) writing, and Scott Rudin (The Social Network, There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men) producing, it sounds like we're in good hands.

Don't let me down, Hollywood, because I love this book more than words.

Marion Cotillard for French Vogue

Seriously, does this even need an introduction at all? Probably not. In case you need one, let's start with: absolute perfection, flawless, breathtaking, et cetera, et cetera.

Simply Put, Showtime's "The Big C" is Amazing.

Holy crap. I just finished watching the pilot for The Big C and I frickin' frackin' love it. Laura Linney is so completely spot-on it's insane. I've always loved her, and thought she was a great actress, but I had no idea she could play comedy this well. Not even that, but it's the fact that she knows how to balance the drama and the comedy of this show so well, that I know for a fact that she has an Emmy nom coming her way next year.

The Big C is about a straight-laced, average, suburban mother, wife, and teacher (Laura Linney) who discovers she has cancer and only one year to live. Instead of opting for treatment, she decides to have the best year of her life. Watch as she deals with her adult-sized kid of a husband (brilliantly played by Oliver Platt), her mouthy, disobedient son, and her wacky, environmental activist brother. Also starring is Gabourey Sidibe, who plays her moody, overweight, and highly hilarious student that Linney takes a special liking to.

I really have to give it to Showtime for having such fantastic original programming, something that you don't see too often in this television day and age. Even better, many of the main characters on their shows are women, and that's something you practically never see. Between this, Dexter, and United States of Tara, Showtime has really made a huge fan out of me.

If you haven't seen The Big C already, you need to start watching now. The Big C airs Mondays at 10:30 on Showtime.

Jimmy Choo x Ugg Collaboration First Look

Looks like the ugly train just isn't stopping today. Check out this first look of the Jimmy Choo x Ugg collaboration that I posted about back in January of this year. Nicky Hilton was the first to tweet a pic of her preview pair.

I mean, I knew it would be bad, but this is just worse than bad. It just hurts to look at it. It really does. It gets worse though.

How much can you expect to spend for a pair of these over-embellished, fringed-out, and generally whacked-out shearling boots? Oh you know, just about $495-$795 a pair. If that's your thing, then check out Jimmy Choo stores this October to snag yourself a pair of these.

Mulberry x Target Preview Sale on Gilt

Two months ago I posted about the upcoming Mulberry x Target collaboration, and today, Gilt had a special preview sale along with the Tucker x Target and John Derian x Target collaborations.

I was brimming with excitement over this sale because we would get a preview of the collection, which was slated for an October 10 release.

I dutifully logged into Gilt at 9am PST on the dot, hand perched on my mouse, ready to attack. But holy crap, the horror. The horror! It was just too early in the morning to see so much ugly. Quilted denim. Cheesy, oversized, studded heart charms. An absolute overuse of patent. Everything in the preview sale was patent. Now, Gilt advertised them as real patent leather, but for pricepoints within the $19.99-$49.99 range, I highly doubt that. I can't confirm that they are or aren't real leather, and I didn't want to chance it. I thought the crossbody was cute, and thought about purchasing it, and I even had a $10 credit, but I didn't want to pay $20 plus shipping for something that could potentially be faux patent (see, the cheap monster rears its ugly head yet again). Now if it is real patent then it's a real bargain, but who knows what these look like in real life. I'd rather wait for the official release and feel these bags up myself.

Of course these bags all sold out within 2 minutes (I kid you not), and I didn't even get a chance to peruse their descriptions until they were all snapped up into members' carts.

Check out the preview below:

Time and time again I'm disappointed by these Target collabs (i.e. Loeffler Randall, Botkier, Jean Paul Gaultier, et cetera, et cetera), but I just keep coming back for more. There's a teeny tiny glimmer of hope that I'm still holding onto, and that's my wish for a bag similar to the Mulberry Alexa once this collection hits stores. Even better, some genuine leather goods.

Please Target, pretty please?

Rachel Zoe in Harper's Bazaar "I Die"

Check out this shoot Rachel Zoe did for Harper's Bazaar, appropriately titled "I Die". Kanye West "Power" Video Premiere

Check out the video premiere of Kanye's "Power", directed by Marco Brambilla, who is best known for his photo-montage style, which is prominently featured in his video installation, "Civilization". True to his form, "Power" is more of a moving painting than it is a music video. With references to the Sistine Chapel and Kanye as the central figure, it's definitely provocative, and definitely Kanye's style.

Thoughts?

Frankly, it freaks me out because it has such eerie imagery, and combined with how slow everything is moving, it's altogether a trippy experience. Even more unsettling are the blatant references to the Illuminati in the video, undoubtedly intentional considering it's not a secret that Kanye has a fascination with the Illuminati. However, I will say this, it's definitely original and it's nothing I've ever seen before in a music video. What really ruined it for me was the tacky 'Power' flashing on the screen on the end. What was up with that? That's like some tacky PowerPoint presentation stuff right there. We all know Kanye is a perfectionist, so we can't chalk it up to poor editing at the end.

Robyn & Snoop Dogg = Match Made in Heaven

Body Talk Part II is insane. I fucking love Robyn. This woman can do no wrong. This is officially the best year for music. Robyn releases an album in three parts over a course of a year, Kanye is finally dropping a new album, and rumors of a Kings of Leon album this October? Yes, please.

Now the only thing I love more than Robyn is Robyn and Snoop together. Throw in some old school pop beats and you get: "You Should Know Better (than to fuck with me) - Robyn feat. Snoop Dogg". Stream below:

Scrooge McDuck vs. "Inception"

I thought Inception was great. I thought the cinematography was excellent, and Chris Nolan really outdid himself. Now with all that said, he must have been a huge fan of Scrooge McDuck, wouldn't you say?

California Prop 8 Overturned!

Today is a great day in L.A. not only because the weather treating us right, but more importantly because U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker overturned California's ballot decision that prohibited same-sex marriages from taking place. Judge Walker deemed that prop 8 violated the equal protection and due process clauses, and that it failed the rational basis test, a judicial standard of review which analyzes whether or not a particular statute had a rational basis, as opposed to arbitrary, in being enacted.

Today is a big victory for same-sex couples and their supporters! Judge Walker has, however, handed down a stay, which the opposition must respond to by Friday, August 6th. Let's just see how far they can get with an appeal though, because failing the rational basis test doesn't allow much room for argument in their favor!

I guess this means Brad and Angelina can finally get married, eh?

Check out the PDF of the court decision here.
